CloudFALL docs

CloudFALL is a Hack Club YSWS program; you ship, we ship.

You pay every month for things you could run yourself. Spotify, Gdrive, Netflix. CloudFALL is about building the replacement, shipping it open source, and ending up with a server of your own to run it on.

These docs will serve as a way to learn how to replace these subscriptions, how to build something new of your own, and how selfhosting works and why do it.

The shape of it#

1. Sign up and get your hours counted. You must be a member of hackclub auth More help at Getting started.
2. Pick something you actually pay for. The best CloudFALL projects replace a specific line on a specific bill. Pick a project has the list, with the ports.
3. Build it and get it running. If you created a software project it should be up and hosted. Self-hosting basics isn't as hard as it looks.
4. Ship it. A public repo, a way to run it, tracked hours. Submitting your project is the checklist.

What makes a CloudFALL project#

A CloudFALL project should be something that will help break apart the cloud, it should be able to stand on it's own and stop you from needing to spend money on monthly/yearly subscriptions. It doesn't have to be a direct replacement but should make life easier for you, and preferable cheaper. Things like youtube downloaders to listen to music, a NAS app to back up things to your server instead of Gdrive.

Hardware counts, as long as it's useful to a homelab, even indirectly.

These docs are editable#

Every page here is a markdown file in a public repo, AD-Archer/stern-docs. If something is wrong, out of date, or was confusing the first time you read it, use Suggest an edit at the bottom of the page it opens a pull request.
